Research in South West Sydney

Health research is critical to our goal of a healthier population in south west Sydney.
South Western Sydney Local Health District is the fastest growing health district in New South Wales with the population projected to grow to more than one million residents in 2021. Health services will be developed to meet the significant health needs of this diverse community and health research will be a centrepiece of this expansion.

South Western Sydney LHD is a vibrant and developing District with a magnificent capacity for cutting edge, innovative research. Research leadership in south west Sydney has grown from the teaching hospitals of Liverpool and Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospitals. It has gained considerable momentum with the collaboration partnerships with the University of New South Wales and the University of Western Sydney, the commitment of local clinicians, and the commitment and financial support of local companies and communities.

Significant achievements have already been made with the:

  • Establishment of the Ingham Institute for Applied Medical Research, and of the NSW Government Biomedical research rules. The Institute facilitates cutting-edge research on a range of disease areas affecting the local community.

  • Appointment of a Research Director for the SWSLHD and the Ingham Institute who provides leadership and direction to the research effort in SWSLHD.

  • Development of the Ingham Institute Building, a Clinical Skills and Simulation Centre and the Research Radiation Oncology Bunker with only the second in the world MRI complex linear accelerator (due for completion in 2013).

  • Appointment of a Director of Clinical Trials funded through the Ingham Institute to increase capabilities in the conduct of clinical trials for the District.

  • Expansion of research design and analysis capacity through the appointment of a bio-statistical team.

This is an exciting time for research development in SWSLHD. Following extensive consultation, the District has developed the new Research Strategy for South Western Sydney Local Health District 2012-2021 taking us into the next decade. This Strategy will provide the direction for how we will develop and grow research to better meet the growing and diverse needs and health challenges of our local communities.
